Audrey Hepburn; winner of 13 awards including BAFTA, Grammy and Golden Globe Awards, mother of two, actress, humanitarian and style icon.
It's been almost 23 years since she died, but she still remains one of the biggest and best actresses of all time, as well as one of the most iconic style idols for women.
Most people look for her fashion sense in her movies, different characters she plays, what kind of character she played and how her fashion represented that character.
It was the movie 'Breakfast at Tiffany’s' that placed Audrey Hepburn firmly in her style icon place. The posters of the movie clearly show the chic style she had in the movie; large sunglasses, gloves, a black dress - which is simple yet sophisticated, a large but beautiful pearl necklace and to finish it off, her hair placed into a neat bun which perfectly rests on her head with a little tiara. Simple of course, but it was fashionable and perfect which made her the queen of fashion.
The dress she wore in the movie was designed by fashion designer and long term friend, Hubert de Givenchy. In the movie she is also seen wearing a beige trench coat as well as a pink cocktail dress which in my opinion is quite cute! A line of clothing was produced after the movie was released, which represented the look of Audrey and her style in the movie - however fashion changes. Audrey changed her style to something other than dresses, moving on to a full skirt with a sweater and a scarf around her neck or head - she always worked closely with her friend Givenchy to create different looks and outfits.
She used to change her accessories all the time too, even if it was wearing the same outfit, it was the accessories that made the difference! At first she could wear a black dress, but that outfit would become so different once she added those diamond earrings or a necklace.
In the movie 'Roman Holiday' she played a princess who runs away to Rome, and in the movie she makes the character stand out, with a very contemporary look using leather sandals, laced cotton blouses, pointed flats and of course bright and colourful silk scarves which all concluded and resulted in the perfect outfit for summer.
Two years later she was in a movie called 'Funny Face' which was a bohemian romance and she rocked and pulled off a completely different look! She played a memorable character Jo Stockton who was obsessed with fashion and played her well, with the many outfits in the movie. Her main outfit was a look which included a black turtle-neck, her stylish trench coat and cropped black skinny jeans. She also wore a custom-created Givenchy vermillion gown and that look was completed with white gloves, ooh!
'Love in the Afternoon' was a different movie for Audrey where she had a play a student who had a very preppy feminine charm! She wore a selection of printed and cotton sun-dresses, striped pants, button up blouses and very colourful knife cardigans. Her hairstyle just finished the style, as it was simple loose bunches tied with cute ribbons. Gloves were also included in some of the outfits she wore during the movie, but they were usually paired with sophisticated long dresses.
Finally, in the movie 'How to Steal a Million' - Givenchy gave Audrey Hepburn an outfit which was elegant and sixties-fuelled. She played Nicole Bonnet, the daughter of an art forger. These outfits seemed very futuristic and cute. White tailoring, lace bubble dresses and really bright coats! White sunglasses and modern style jewellery by Paco Rabanne and Oliver Goldsmith.
On July 2, 2015 at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Audrey Hepburn: Portraits of an Icon was opened up to celebrate Audrey Hepburn as a style icon and in memory of her. They have 44 portraits of her at the gallery and it's there for people who wish to see images of her which haven't really been seen, or just enjoy the gallery.
She was a wonderful style icon and it is still great to see that she is being recognised for that. She will never be forgotten and will always be the fashion icon of past generations, our generation, and many generations yet to come.
