Donald Trump will make a three-day state visit to the UK in early June. The US President will be officially hosted by the Queen at either Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle and will holding talks with the Prime Minister at Downing Street. Included in the three days will also be a ceremony in Portsmouth to mark 75 years since the D-Day landings.
There are already a number of British politicians, such as Sir Vince Cable and Jeremy Corbyn, who have publicly stated that they will be declining the invitation to the state visit banquet at Buckingham Palace in honour of Mr Trump. The Labour leader believes it would be wrong to “roll out the red carpet” for the someone who he accused of using “racist and misogynist rhetoric”.
Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, however, supports Donald Trump coming over and addressing Parliament, declaring that “he’s is a controversial politician, but in the end his visit is about more than Trump’s policies; it is about the alliance between the United States and United Kingdom that goes back many, many years”.
This would not be the first time Donald Trump steps on British soil in his capacity as President. He previously met the Queen at Windsor Castle when he came to the UK in July 2018, on what was just a working visit, although it was enough to spark mass protests in London and Edinburgh.
There was feisty debate on Benji Hyer’s Sunday radio show on the matter. Listener Ricky made the case that “this is a President who has put us to the front of the queue” and therefore “we can’t sabotage ourselves” by cancelling the state visit and “threatening US-UK relations”.
But Benji defiantly hit back, branding Ricky’s message as “entirely contradictory” and setting the record straight by telling listeners that “Trump will give us nothing in way of a trade deal” because he “says one thing and does another”.
