Pop music surrounds us, but how often do we really listen to what we’re hearing? Switched on Pop is the podcast that pulls back the curtain on pop music. Each episode, join musicologist Nate Sloan and songwriter Charlie Harding as they reveal the secret formulas that make pop songs so infectious. By figuring out how pop hits work their magic, you’ll fall in love with songs you didn’t even know you liked.
Lil Nas X currently holds the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his surprise hit "Old Town Road".
But though the song is dripping with country twang, you won't find it anywhere on the country charts. That's because Billboard removed it, on the grounds of not having enough "musical elements" of country—a move that in turn left many wondering if the vanishing had something to do with Lil Nas X, a black artist, venturing into a field dominated by white musicians.
On this episode, Switched On Pop dig deep into the history and musical matter of "Old Town Road", then pit it against other country hits to test its deep fried bonafides.
